Why Watching TV Isn’t Stress Relief (and What to Do Instead)

When I ask clients how they manage stress, one of the most common answers I hear is, “I just unwind with TV at the end of the day.”
And while there’s nothing wrong with enjoying your favorite shows, here’s the truth: watching TV isn’t stress relief. It’s dissociation, a form of checking out, not actually moving stress out of your body.
If you’re dealing with thinning hair, this distinction matters more than you realize. Stress hormones are one of the biggest drivers of hair loss, and how you manage them directly impacts your follicles.
The Stres and Hair Loss Connection
Chronic stress raises cortisol, a hormone that disrupts the hair growth cycle. Elevated cortisol:
Shortens the growth (anagen) phase
Pushes more follicles into shedding (telogen effluvium)
Fuels inflammation, making follicles more sensitive to DHT
Slows down healing and circulation in the scalp
That’s why so many women notice sudden shedding after stressful life events, or a gradual thinning during seasons of chronic stress.
Dissociation vs. True Stress Relief
When you sit in front of a screen, your brain shifts into passive mode. This can feel relaxing in the moment, but it doesn’t discharge the cortisol already circulating in your body. That stress is still there, stored in your muscles, nervous system, and even your gut.
Dissociation (TV): Escaping, numbing, distracting.
Stress relief: Actively signaling your body to calm down, process, and release stress hormones.
There’s a time and place for both but if TV is your only form of relief, your body may be carrying more stress than you realize.
What Real Stress Relief Looks Like
The goal isn’t to give up your favorite shows, but to add practices that actually help your body move stress through. Effective stress relief might include:
Movement: Walking, stretching, yoga, or dancing.
Breathwork: Deep breathing, box breathing, or meditation.
Creative outlets: Journaling, art, or music.
Scalp massage: Doubles as stress relief and scalp stimulation.
Community & connection: Spending time with supportive friends or attending wellness events (like our sound baths at Scalp Garden Buford).
These practices activate your parasympathetic nervous system. This is the “rest and repair” mode your follicles thrive in.
Why It Matters for Hair Health
If your stress is unaddressed, no amount of supplements or topical treatments will give your follicles what they need. Stress management is one of the core pillars of trichology care, right alongside scalp treatments and nutrition.
When you learn to release stress in your body, you create an environment where your follicles can stay in growth mode longer and resist shedding.
Local Perspective: Buford & Gwinnett
Many of my clients in Buford and across Gwinnett County come in saying, “I don’t feel that stressed,” even though their bodies are carrying the weight of constant cortisol. Once we add true stress management practices into their routine, they often notice not just better hair outcomes but also improved sleep, digestion, and energy.
Final Thoughts
Watching TV has its place. it can be fun, cozy, and a healthy escape now and then. But it isn’t stress relief. For healthier hair, you need to move stress out of your body.
At Scalp Garden Buford, I help women build hair care routines that include stress management as a core part of the plan. If you’re ready to address thinning hair from the inside out, book a Know Your Roots consultation and let’s get started.
