Quoted in a Men's Hair Loss Feature, Here's the Message I Hope People Actually Remember

Screenshot of a Man of Many article featuring commentary from trichologist Christine McMillan on men's hair loss and thinning hair

When I was recently asked to contribute to an article on men's hair loss, I was honored to be included alongside dermatologists, surgeons, and other experts from around the world. You can read the article here.

But if I'm being honest, seeing my name in print wasn't the part that excited me most.

What excited me was seeing a few ideas I've been sharing with clients for years reach a much larger audience.

Because the truth is that most people still misunderstand hair loss.

Hair Loss Is Often More Than a Cosmetic Issue

One of the quotes featured in the article was:

"Hair loss is often one of the first places the body waves a red flag that something internally has shifted."

I believe this deeply.

While genetics absolutely play a role in many forms of hair loss, especially androgenetic alopecia, genetics are rarely the entire story. Hair follicles are remarkably sensitive structures. They often respond to changes in the body long before we notice symptoms elsewhere.

Stress. Hormonal shifts. Inflammation. Nutritional deficiencies. Illness. Rapid weight loss. Poor sleep. Medications.

All of these can influence the hair growth cycle.

That's why my job as a trichologist isn't simply helping people grow hair. It's helping them understand what their hair might be trying to tell them.

Genetics Load the Gun

Another quote highlighted in the article was:

"Genetics absolutely matter, but genetics often load the gun while inflammation, stress, hormones, illness, rapid weight loss, bad nutrition, and sleep or poor scalp health pull the trigger."

It's one of my favorite ways to explain the relationship between genetics and environment.

Two people can inherit a similar genetic predisposition for hair loss and have completely different experiences.

One person may notice thinning in their thirties.

Another may not experience significant changes until their sixties.

Why?

Because genetics create susceptibility. The environment surrounding the follicle often influences how quickly that susceptibility becomes visible.

This doesn't mean we can eliminate genetics. It does mean we should pay attention to the factors we can influence.

Why Waiting Is Usually a Mistake

The second quote from the article that stood out to me was this:

"Hair loss intervention is a lot like dental care. Prevention and early maintenance are far easier than rebuilding what's already been lost."

This is one of the hardest conversations I have.

Many people wait until they can clearly see their scalp before seeking answers. By that point, some follicles may have been struggling for years.

The good news is that early thinning doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes it shows up as:

  • A widening part

  • Less volume in a ponytail

  • Increased shedding

  • More scalp visibility in photos

  • Hair that doesn't seem to grow as long as it used to

  • A scalp that feels itchy, oily, irritated, or inflamed

These subtle changes are often worth investigating.

Healthy Hair Starts With Healthy Scalp Tissue

Perhaps the most important message from the article was this:

"Healthy hair grows from healthy scalp tissue."

It sounds simple, but it's often overlooked.

People spend hundreds of dollars chasing miracle products while ignoring the environment the hair is trying to grow from.

If the scalp is inflamed, congested, excessively oily, chronically irritated, or affected by conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or folliculitis, it becomes much harder to support optimal growth.

Hair health starts with scalp health.

Always.

A Small Clinic in Buford, A Bigger Conversation

As someone who works one-on-one with clients in Buford, Georgia, it's incredibly rewarding to see these conversations reaching a broader audience.

Every day I sit across from people who are frustrated, confused, and often scared by changes in their hair.

My goal has never been to sell fear.

My goal is to provide answers.

To help people understand what they're seeing.

To identify what can be improved.

And to remind them that hair loss is not something they have to navigate alone.

If your hair is changing and you've been wondering whether it's worth looking into, this is your sign.

I'd much rather see someone six months too early than six years too late.
