How Do I as a Trichologist Feel About Prescription Solutions?

This is a question I hear often at Scalp Garden Buford: “Do you support prescription medications for hair loss?”
The honest answer is it depends. I consider myself a root cause kind of practitioner. If a prescription is only masking symptoms while the underlying issue goes unaddressed, I’m not a fan. But if a prescription is necessary and appropriate for your unique situation? I'm all for it.
I will always support you in making the decision that’s right for your body.
Root-Cause First
When we’re talking about thinning hair, it’s important to remember that your follicles don’t exist in isolation. They’re influenced by your hormones, immune system, nutrition, stress levels, and even gut health.
That means if we just throw a prescription at the problem, we might:
Mask the real issue without fixing it
Miss early signs of deeper health imbalances
Become dependent on a solution that doesn’t truly support your whole health
That’s why my first instinct is always to look for the root cause.
When Prescriptions Are Needed
That said, sometimes prescription medications really are the best choice. For example:
Autoimmune-driven hair loss: Steroid treatments may help reduce inflammation and protect follicles.
Advanced genetic loss: Topical minoxidil or oral prescriptions may provide density support.
Underlying conditions: Thyroid medication, iron therapy, or hormone balancing can all be critical.
In these cases, I don’t hesitate to encourage my clients to work with their doctors. If I’m the first professional on the scene and see something that needs medical attention, I will always provide a referral so you’re supported from all angles.
Empowerment Over Pressure
What I will never do is pressure you into any treatment. Prescription or otherwise. My role as a trichologist is to:
Present you with the data I see
Share what research says about your condition
Explain your options clearly
Empower you to make informed choices
Because at the end of the day, it’s your body. You’re the one living in it, and you deserve to feel confident about every decision you make.
A Balanced Perspective
I don’t blindly trust every prescription, but I also don’t automatically dismiss them. My job is to find balance. Combining the best of root-cause trichology with the necessary tools of medicine when the situation calls for it.
That balance is what creates a comprehensive, personalized approach and what truly supports both your hair and your overall health.
Local Perspective: Buford & Gwinnett
Here in Gwinnett County, I’ve met people who were discouraged by providers who only offered prescriptions without exploring the “why” behind their loss. I’ve also met people who were told not to bother with prescriptions when in reality, those medications could have been life changing.
The truth is usually somewhere in between, and my role is to help you find that middle ground with clarity and compassion.
Final Thoughts
I’m a root-cause girly at heart. But I’m also realistic and supportive. If prescription solutions are right for you, I’ll be the first to cheer you on. If root-cause work alone is enough, I’ll guide you through that too.
At Scalp Garden, my promise is to never push you into a treatment. I will only present the facts, share the research, and empower you to make the decision that feels best for your body.
